Throughout the comic's life, Matt has regarded Ivan as a pet, a child, a threatening enemy, and the list goes on.  This was done intentionally to show the readers that we aren't ever really sure what Ivan is exactly, and that Matt really doesn't know how to handle his foot-tall nuisance.
